Intermediate Shaft for Rudder Control

The rudder cable control is routed from the left side of the fuselage to the central axis in the rear fuselage section. This is achieved using a vertical shaft in the centre of the fuselage, supported by an upper and lower wooden cross-member. Why is the lower cross-member cut diagonally?
